Christmas Card Display DIY with RONA
I have been looking for the perfect way to display my holiday cards for years! Never finding exactly what I wanted in stores, every year I try something new I had seen on Pinterest...pinning them to ribbon, hanging them around an entryway, around a mirror, and last year I just taped them on to the wall in the shape of a tree...yawn.
So this year I decided I was going to find a stylish way to display my cards finally. After looking through lots of inspiration online and asking the hubby to help me pick one that I would be capable of DIYing (haha) I set off to RONA. I was shocked by how easy this little project actually was (with a little help from the super friendly staff at RONA).
What you will need to make a card display:
1) 24 X 40-inch piece of wood, I found a piece of wood that was not too far from the size I had in mind, so just had a few inches cut off right there in Rona.
2) A thin piece of molding to use as the shelves. I again had this cut right there in RONA to fit across my board perfectly. One piece of molding was the exact size needed for four shelves.
3) Sandpaper
4) Wood glue
5) White paint
6) Wall hanging kit
7) Rag
Step 1: Prepare your piece of wood and molding pieces by sanding any rough edges. Wipe clean with a dry towel.
Step 2: White wash board and molding. This isn't necessary, but to fit with my home decor, I wanted a more white base rather than yellow, so I decided to do a quick whitewash. For this, you need 1 cup of water, mixed with 1 cup of white paint. Dip your rag into the water/paint mixture and then apply thin layers of the wood until you get your desired look. I did probably three or four very light coats to achieve my look. This dries very quickly, so no need to wait more than an hour before starting the next step.
Step 3: Apply the strips of molding as shelves. I measured and marked with a pencil every 10 inches and then used wood glue to attach the shelves. Wiping any excess glue with a damp paper towel. Allow to dry completely.
Step 4: Turn over and apply wall mount kit if you plan to hang it. It looks great hung on a wall but would look equally as good resting on an entry table, for example.
