Non-Toxic Skin Care

NOT ALL CHEMICALS ARE BAD AND NOT ALL “NATURAL” SUBSTANCES ARE GOOD.


Unfortunately, the beauty industry is zero help when trying to find clean, safe products. The industry is virtually unregulated. The Food and Drug Administration does not even require the basic safety testing of ingredients in personal care products before they are used.

Companies also take advantage of the soft regulations on beauty products and labels. They can use words such as clean, safe, natural or toxic-free, even if their products are filled with ingredients that might be unsafe because of lack of regulation. 

So, the only way you can really know if the product is safe is to read the ingredients, and if you have tried to read the ingredients list of a typical product on your bathroom shelf, then you know that is easier said than done. I hope to get to a point where I can turn over any label, read the ingredients and instantly know if a chemical listed is potentially dangerous or not. Since I do not have the knowledge to do that yet, I have to take the time to sit at my computer and look up each and every ingredient listed. Luckily, there are a few resources that can help us navigate these ingredient lists. 

There are two main apps and a website I have been using to help me decide which products to ditch and which ones are safe to use. Even these tools can be flawed and opinion based, but I still think they are a great way to determine if a product is safe in general.

WHAT ELSE CAN WE DO?

  1. Use fewer products.
    Streamline your beauty routine and if you don’t absolutely need a product, ditch it. 

  2. Watch out for buzzwords.
    These words may sound appealing, but actually mean nothing.

    • Natural

    • Organic

    • Non-toxic

    • Botanical

    • Clean

    • Hypoallergenic

    • Physician approved

    • Simple

    • Safe

    • Eco-Friendly

    • Green

  3. Avoid the big offenders.
    These ingredients are considered some of the most toxic.

    • Parabens

    • Fragrance

    • Formaldehyde

    • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

    • Polyethylene Glycol

    • BHA and BHT

  4. Look for a short ingredient list.
    Buy products with ingredients that you actually understand!

     

  5. Use your judgement.
    Ask friends you trust or find influencers with the same ideals as you to recommend brands. Eventually, you will find certain brands that you also trust and they will become your go-tos.
